High molecular polychloroprene with a Mooney viscosity of 80-2000 MEisprepd.bypolymerisationofchloroprenewith0-20wt.% comonomer in aq. emulsion at 0-60 deg.C to a monomer conversion of 50-96% in the presence of a regulator and with addn. before, during or after polymerisation, but at latest before removal of residual monomer, of an olefin of formula R1R2C=C(R3)-X-R4 (I) X is e.g. O or S or NR5; R1 is H, 1-19C alkyl, 2-19C alkenyl, phenyl, 1-4C alkylenephenyl or 5-12C cycloalk(en)yl; R2 is H, 1-19C alkyl, 2-12C alkenyl or (1-4C alkylene)phenyl; R3 is H, 1-19C alkyl, 2-19C alkenyl, (1-4C alkylene)phenyl, acryl, formyl or acetyl; R4 and R5 are 1-19C alkyl, 2-19C alkenyl, (1-4C alkylene)phenyl, acryl, 5-12C cycloalk(en)yl or together form a 4-7C ring. The polymer has high thermal stability which is important during drying of the coagulated latex, improved processability which becomes apparent in the faster formation of film by rolling and higher strength after vulcanisation. Adhesives prepd. from the polymer have good storage stability and pot life.
