Purificn. of waste radioactive gases leaving combustion plants - where hot gases are fed through ceramic filter element coated with catalytic platinum metal

The gases contain dust and residual organic impurities; and are fed through filter elements which are coated with catalytically active substances, esp. 0.05-5.0 wt.% of Pt and/or Pt metals. The exhaust gases are pref. above 350 deg.C when they are fed through the filters. Method is used esp. in nuclear technology and/or in nuclear power stations in conjunction with the burning of solid, weakly radioactive waste, which is thus converted into ash. Ceramic filters are normally used, but are soon clogged by swollen tar prods. and require frequent and expensive cleaning. By using the invention, no organic cpds. are deposited on the filters so their life is greatly increased.
