PURPOSE:To reduce energy consumption while improving durability of a hydraulic pump by driving the pump only in operation of a power steering. CONSTITUTION:A hydraulic pump 10 is connected to an engine 13 through a belt 11 and electromagnetic clutch 12. A strain detector 19 is mounted on a shaft 18 of a handle 17 so that when torsional transformation of the handle shaft 18 exceeds a predetermined value, said electromagnetic clutch 12 is energized by electric signals from the detector 19 through a control 16 to drive the pump 10. A rack cylinder 22 is provided with a valve 23 for placing the left and right chambers in a cylinder 22 in communication with each other or disconnecting both chambers. This valve 23 is closed when the electromagnetic clutch 12 is turned on so as to provide a proper power aid. |
