A lead battery comprises an active material derived from a lead monoxide. The lead monoxide has a density of 8.3 to 9.2 g/cc, an average particle size not larger than O.2 mu , an infrared absorption peak at a wave number of 1400 to 1410 cm<-1> and a chromatic anhydride reactivity of at least 94% or a heat- treatment product thereof. Starting materials previously used in the preparation of active materials for lead batteries have usually been prepared by the dry oxidation of metallic lead, with attendant pollution problems, and are of relatively high density and particle size and difficult to convert entirely into active materials. This lead battery has an improved active material utilization ratio which can be maintained at a high level over a long period, a long life and good electrical properties. The lead monoxide is formed from lead granules by wet pulverization in a rotary mill in the presence of oxygen. |
