<p>PURPOSE:To elevate the workability, by making a hand scanner an input means of a word whose means is unknown, in an electronic dictionary. CONSTITUTION:An electronic dictionary which is mainly constituted of a dictionary memory 4 for storing the information required for a translation such as Japanese translation of an English word, and a translation control part 5 is provided as its input means with a character recognition part 2 for recognizing a printing type character pattern of a book, etc. and converting it to a character input code. The character recognition part 2 receives as its input a video signal from a hand scanner 1 for executing a photoelectric conversion by scanning the surface of paper manually, refers to a dictionary memory 3 as to the pattern information required for recognizing a character, and recognizes a character. A result of recognition is sent to the translation control part 5, a translation is executed by retrieving the dictionary memory 4, and a result of recognition and a result of translation are displayed on a display.</p> |
