PURPOSE:To connect single mode optical fibers by melt-sticking by concentrating molten areas to the narrow areas in the end faces of the fibers. CONSTITUTION:Fibers 1 to be connected are supported on a support table 4 which permits axial adjustment of cores, thence the end faces thereof are butted each other. On the other hand, discharge electrodes 3 which are <=30 deg. in an angle theta at the leading ends and are as short as 0.4-0.8mm. in interelectrode distance (x) as compared with those of ordinary ones are opposed each other. The interelectrode distance (x) is short and therefore when electric discharge is made from the elecdrodes, the end parts of the fibers 1 are melt-stuck by melting of the narrow areas of the fibers 1, and the connected part is uninfluenced by surface tension. It is equally well to widen the interelectrode distance and to narrow the distance between the positions of the end faces of the single mode fibers and other discharge electrode. |
