Method for cutting to length especially edge-sawn lumber pieces, where the desired cutting length at one or both of the ends of the piece of lumber is determined by automatic or manual fashion, and where the lumber pieces 5 are transported on a cross conveyor 1 provided with rollers 6 for driving the lumber pieces 5 up to one or the other side of the cross conveyor 1. Each lumber piece 5 being cut is adjusted in its longitudinal dimension in a first step relative to a sawing element 8 by means of said rollers 6 and an end stop 7 of a plurality of end stops 7 with particular mutual spacing, a stretch less than the cutting length and at most less than said mutual spacing, after which the piece of lumber is cut to length and adjusted in a second step in its longitudinal dimension relative to a second sawing element, either by a stop element 10 which can move in the longitudinal dimension of the piece of lumber, followed by a second stationary sawing element 11, or by a second sawing element 16 which can move in the longitudinal dimension of the piece of lumber, a stretch equal to said cutting length minus the first-mentioned stretch, after which the piece of lumber is again cut to length.
