<p>Adjacent to the top of the shaft is provided an electrical supply point and a horizontal supporting runway for a winch carriage. The winch has a winding drum for a cable which passes over a pulley at the end of a cantilever jib extending horizontally from the carriage. The carriage can be moved along the runway so that the pulley is centred over the shaft. The cable free end is fitted with a mounting for a brush which just fits the inside of the shaft. As the mounting is lowered down the shaft, the brush bristles sweep clean the walls of the shaft. The cable is not only load-bearing but also carries a low voltage, e.g. 24 volts, supply to the brush mounting. The mounting contains a reservoir for disinfectant, deodoriser, etc. This is distributed by a centrifugal spinner, below the brush, driven by an electric motor in the brush mounting. After brush-cleaning the shaft on the way down, the mounting centrifugal spinner is switched on to dust the walls with treatment powder on the way up. After shaft cleaning, the brush mounting is wound fully up, the carriage rolled back and the complete unit fitted with a box cover. The carriage can be detached from the runway to be transferred to clean another shaft. The installation is partic. useful for cleaning and disinfecting the inside of a rubbish chute serving many floors in a block of flats.</p> |
