A toilet compsn. consists of a hydrated gel of a hydrophilic, crosslinked polymer impregnated with a perfume. The compsn. does not affect the skin. Perfume is not lost from the compsn. during storage, and the amt. of perfume can therefore be reduced. The polymers are partic. polyvinyl alcohol (pref.), polyvinyl- pyrrolidone, polyacrylamides and poly(hydroxyethyl acrylates). Crosslinking is pref. by irradiating an aq. 0.5-10 wt.% soln. with high-energy ionising radiation e.g. by gamma rays or an electron beam, at a dosage of 0.5-5 megarads; chemical crosslinking e.g. with ethylene chlorohydrin, is possible, but less pref. The degree of polymerisation of the polymer is esp. 1000-2000. The degree of swelling of the hydrated gel in water is 3-100 x by wt. The amt. is esp. 0.1-10 pts. wt./1 pt. wt. of the crosslinked polymer; larger amts. may be used, but miscibility is then pref. improved by addn. of an alcohol or glycol. The perfume may be dissolved in an aq. soln. of the polymer before the polymer is crosslinked, or the crosslinked polymer may be immersed in an aq. soln. of the perfume. The impregnated resin is formulated into a toilet compsn. contg. 0.05-2 (0.1-1) wt.% of the perfume.
|
