An animal feed or a constituent of an animal feed in powder form is produced by a solution and/or an emulsion of the constituent being concentrated and dried. When preparing the powder, the pH of the liquid employed is lowered to below 5 using an inorganic acid, for example hydrochloric acid, which is sufficiently strong and which is not, or almost not, volatile under the given conditions, after which the liquid is dried and then mixed with a preservative which consists of one or more solid salts of one or more organic acids, for example calcium formate. When an aqueous solution of the powder was stored in a cowshed, no microbiological spoilage occurred and the number of organisms remained constant. No enterobacteria were found, and the powder solution was also physically stable.
