An automatic device (30) is described for the insertion of a mask unit (10) into a cathode ray tube front plate (12). The mask unit contains a shadow mask (14) to which there are fitted at least three springs (18), each of which is provided with an opening. The front plate contains a window part and a circumferential wall (22) in which at least three pins (20) are embedded for engagement in the spring holes. The automatic device contains a subunit at each mask spring point. At least three such subunits (60) can move horizontally and have a stop (58) for touching the lower edge of a mask spring. Each moving subunit furthermore has a positioning pin (70) which can be moved between an engagement position (B) and an out-of-engagement position (A). In the engagement position, the positioning pin is at a predetermined distance from the stop which is equal to a nominal distance between a lower edge of a spring and the centre line of the spring opening added to a predetermined linear movement distance. Each moving subunit furthermore has a fork-shaped part or a pin finder (72) which is centred with the positioning pins. <IMAGE>
