A tundish for use in the continuous casting of steel, having an external metal jacket and a durable or permanent lining of refractory material adjoining the jacket and having an inner expendable lining which has refractory thermal insulation plates with an inward-facing erosion-resistant layer and a backing layer providing greater thermal insulation. In use, the erosion-resistant layer protects the backing layer from attack by the molten steel in the tundish and the thermal insulation provided by the backing layer limits the temperature at the outer surface of the plates to a maximum of 700 DEG C at the end of one hour of continuous casting. Specific internal lining plates with a high density on the topside and a low density on the rearside are likewise described.
