PURPOSE:To make it easy to control electrolyte and to prevent crossover by catalytic action by forming a matrix electrode having electron conductivity which is electrically separated from a fuel electrode and an air electrode inside electrolyte retaining matrix layers. CONSTITUTION:A matrix electrode 12 has catalytic action to hydrogen and is electrically separated from a fuel electrode 10 and an air electrode 11 by electrolyte retaining matrix layers 41, 42. For a phosphoric acid type fuel cell, the matrix electrode 12 is made of porous support carbon containing a material having catalytic action to hydrogen such as platinum. When the potential of the matrix electrode 12 is kept in the potential between the fuel electrode 10 and the air electrode 11, a hydrogen molecule penetrated from the fuel electrode to the matrix layer 41 is converted into proton H<+> in the matrix electrode 12. Since hydrogen molecule does not reach the air electrode, crossover can completely be prevented. |
