A plasma-jet ignition system has a store for storing electrical plasma ignition energy; a switching device triggers in response to an ignition timing signal and is connected to a charge terminal of a capacitor of the store. An electrical charge which is stored in the capacitor is discharged when the switching device is operated as a function of the ignition timing signal; in consequence, irregular discharging of the stored electrical energy during each ignition timing interval is avoided.
