ALKYD RESIN COMPOSITIONS AND THEIR USE IN VARIEGATION PASTES FOR PAINTS AND LACQUERS

Alkyd resins comprise the reaction product of 5-10 wt.% of a polyethyleneglycol (PEG) with an av. mol. wt. of 500-5000, pref. 1000-3000 with 3-8 wt.% of a formaldehyde condensate obtd. by alkaline condensn. of formaldehyde with a mono 3-9C alkylphenol and/or arylphenol, and 8-30 wt.% of a natural or synthetic, practically OH-free ester of unsaturated oil fatty acids and polyols. The reaction prod. is then condensed with 5-20 wt.% unsaturated oil fatty acids, 15-35 wt.% p-tert. butyl-benzoic acid, 10-30 wt.% cyclic dicarboxylic acids and 15-25 wt.% polyols to give an alkyd resin with an acid value of 10-25 mg KOH/g, an OH-value of 70-130 mg KOH/g and a limiting viscosity of 5.5-7.5 ml/g (CHCl3 at 20 degrees C). The alkyds are esp. useful in the prodn. of pigment pastes for paints and lacquers. They have a wide compatibility range with resins and solvents, and are thus useable in a wide range of coating compsns.
