The shielded arbor is provided at its front end with a thread draw-in device (8, 8a, 12) in order, after completion of the balling operation, to bring the thread which is guided to this arbor end and then severed into the ball interior during take-off of the ball from the closed arbor. The thread draw-in device contains a crown (8) which is formed onto the end of the support sleeve (1) and has teeth (8a) which terminate in a point and are in each case diametrically opposite a tooth gap. Radially inwardly directed catch hooks (8b) start from the points of these teeth (8a), which catch hooks extend approximately to the centre and bridge the thread which is located in its end position between two gaps. In order to make possible reliable catching, even of highly elastic yarns, the crown (8) is provided with a central drop-shaped point (12) which is seated on an axially movable rod (13) and, when the shielded arbor is opened, releases the central passage between the catch hooks (8b). <IMAGE>
