The hollow needle for piercing the skin of a patient, in order to take samples of tissue, consists of an outer tube (13) and an inner tube (19) with specially shared cut-outs at their ends, forming a chamber (35) to hold the sample. The shape of these ends, including a portion (15,16) sloping inwards at the tip, enables the needle to be used as a cutter when the inner tube is rotated axially inside the outer tube. The outer tube is attached to a grip and the inner tube is attached to an operating knob for the required rotation. A locating device between them with end stops, enables the two operating positions to be determined. The end of the inner tube, which projects beyond the outer tube, may be connected to a suction source, and a coagulation source.
