The mechanism by which the preliminary tension of a torsion rod (16) can be set to lift a boot lid (13) or bonnet, is fitted with a ratchet assembly consisting of ratchet wheel (23) working together with catch (21). The ratchet assembly is seated on a bracket fixed to the bodywork (10). The ratchet wheel is keyed onto one end of the torsion spring (16) with stub (27) projecting from the face of the ratchet wheel (23). The stub (27) has a square cross section, on which a suitable spanner can be applied to rotate the stub and the ratchet wheel in direction (29) for pre-tensioning the spring (16). The other end of the spring (16) is supported by bracket (19) and then bent by ninety degrees, so that end section (17) is resting from below against the hinge (12) swinging around pivot (14) and forcing lid (13) to swing open in direction (15) as soon as lock mechanism on lid edge is released.
