Textile softening detergent compositions comprise a nonionic detergent, a cationic textile softener, a builder and a water-soluble polyphosphonic acid of the formula wherein n is 2 or more and Z is an organic group of effective covalency n, or a water-soluble salt thereof, and are preferably made by spray drying a mixture of the nonionic detergent and cationic softener on to spray dried carrier granules comprising at least part of the builders.
