PURPOSE:To increase the life of a zinc electrode by coating the entire surface of the zinc electrode with a layer made of calcium hydroxide with a given diameter. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of zinc oxide and zinc which contains, for example, 40wt% of zinc is added with an aqueous solution of a binding agent, and is kneaded into a paste. The paste is applied to a current collecting net made of copper and is molded, before the molded paste is dried to make a molded zinc body. The molded zinc body is coated with pasty calcium hydroxide, before the body coated with pasty calcium hydroxide is dried, pressed and molded, thus a zinc electrode being obtained. The former pasty calcium hydroxide is prepared, for example, by adding 20wt% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to 30wt% aqueous calcium chloride solution, before the precipitate made of calcium hydroxide developed in the mixture solution is filtered off and any impurities contained in the precipitate is removed. The mean grain diameter of thus prepared calcium hydroxide is 1-5mu. It is preferable that the thickness of the calcium hydroxide layer formed over the molded zinc body is 50-300mu. |
