The comparator determines, by way of interpolation, thicknesses of calibration material whereto detector output signals correspond and provides computer input signals which are a function of these thicknesses. By Means of these computer input signals, an image is calculated of the density distribution of an irradiated patient. This image is free from interference patterns caused by the fact that the detectors are not the same, by non-linearity of detectors or by hardening of radiation. A device of this kind is particularly suitable for medical X-ray diagnosis.
