3-Halogen-3-sulphonyl-propionic acids (IA), and 3-sulphonyl- acrylic acids, (IB), having formula HOOC-CHY-CHX-SO2Z (I) (where X is halogen and Y is H, or X and Y together form a C-C covalent bond; and Z is opt. substd. alkyl, aryl or heteroaryl) are prepd. by halogenating 2-sulphonyl-succinic acids having formula HOOC-CH(SO2Z)-CH2-COOH (II) and either recovering (IA) or dehydrohalogenating the reaction prod. to (IB) by heating to 85-150 deg.C. (II) is halogenated at 0-80 deg.C, in a solvent inert towards the halogenating agents and using at least the equimolar quantity of halogenating agent. (I) are synthesis intermediates, e.g. for the prepn. of new carboxylic acid derivs. used, inter alia, as reactive dyes, e.g. Ph-SO2-CHCl-CH2-COOH can be converted to its acid chloride and coupled with an aminated anthraquinone deriv. (I) are prepd. directly. In (II), Z is pref. Ph opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl, halogen, COOH or SO3H; or 1-15C alkyl opt. substd. by halogen, OH, CN, COOH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkyl-sulphonyl, Ph or naphthyl. The halogenating agent is esp. Cl2 or Br2. (II) can be prepd. in situ, e.g. by reacting maleic- or fumaric acid with a sulphinic acid having formula Z-SO2H, or by reacting a substd. succinic acid having formula HOOC-CH(S-Z)-CH2-COOH with an oxidising agent, e.g. H2O2 or a halogen.
|
