<p>PURPOSE:To simplify the production process and to obtain the titled liquid crystal in high yield, by carrying out the first step esterification reaction in a state where the phenolhydroxy group of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid is protected, removing the protecting group, followed by the second step esterification reaction. CONSTITUTION:4-Carboxyphenyl-tetrahydropyranyl ether is prepared by protecting temporarily the phenolhydroxy group of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid with a tetrahydropyranyl group, and 4-n-butylphenyl-4-tetrahydropyranyloxy-benzoate is formed by the first step esterification reaction. The tetrahydropyranyl group is removed to give 4-n-butylphenyl-4-hydroxyl-benzoate having free phenolhydroxy group, and the second step esterification reaction is carried out to give the desired liquid crystal shown by the formula I (R1 and R2 are one pair of groups shown by the formula II-formula V which may be overlapped; l, m, n, and p are 1-10) where R2 is n- butylphenyl, showing a mesomorphic phase of the smectic or nematic type.</p> |
