The multi-purpose element serves as a filler in installations for exchanging energy and/or mass or in eliminator plates or the like. Although in this case the aim is a compact design in the smallest possible space, exchange surfaces which are as large as possible are to permit a satisfactory mixing of the media without, however, it being possible because of the constricted and narrow ducts for the liquid flowing from top to bottom to run out sufficiently easily as a consequence of cohesion or adhesion only when by means of special design configurations of the duct ends cohesion and adhesion forces can be minimised thereby. The multi-purpose element consists in this case of helical surfaces, which are arranged next to one another and have essentially parallel axes, or of hollow bands bounded by such surfaces, the sense of rotation of adjacent helical surfaces being opposite. The result is to impose a circulating movement on the media flowing through the multi-purpose element, resulting in the achievement of long flow paths inside the multi-purpose element, on the one hand, while on the other hand as a consequence of the alternately opposite sense of rotation all the tangential flows of the media in the contact zones of adjacent spirals are rectified, so that low pressure losses occur nevertheless only inside the multi-purpose element. <IMAGE>
