A device for gripping a cable (or shaft or rope) is disclosed, which is capable of providing a controlled grip on the cable, gripping the cable positively up to a predetermined force and then permitting slip to occur between the device and the cable in a controlled manner, thus permitting the device to be used for arresting the motion of a body, attached to the device, along the cable, at a controlled rate. One application could be the case of a body falling under gravity being arrested at a controlled rate. Further applications could relate to a means of reducing cable snatch during towing or tethering of vessels or vehicles. The device consists of a U-section main frame (1,2) the cable (3) being loaded into the U-section by a control unit consisting of a spring (5), a cam plate (8) and loading arms (9). Slip between the cable and device occurs at a predetermined value of load applied at (10) when the loading arms (9) are fully depressed. <IMAGE> |
