The sound adsorbing layer is for protecting underwater structures, in particular submarines, from shock waves generated by explosions. The protective layer is formed from soft plastic (10) in which pressure-tight hollow bodies (11) are embedded. These hollow bodies have a collapsing pressure which is in the region of the peak pressure generated by the explosion. This collapsing pressure is about 10 MPa. The hollow bodies are uniformly distributed through the plastics layer and consist of hollow glass or plastics spheres. USE - Protection of underwater structures from explosions.
