A process is claimed for the continuous prodn. of gel-free ethylene terpolymers with Mw 100,000-1.5 million (I), contg. (a) 1-59 wt.% ethylene, (b) 40-99-c) wt.% vinyl ester units of formula R1COOCR2=CH2 and (c) 1-59 wt.% monomer(s) of formula CO, CH2=CR3R4 and/or R8-CH=CH-R8; the reaction is carried out in soln., in a cascade of 3-10 reactors, in a polar organic solvent with a concn. of 20-75 wt.% (w.r.t. monomers + solvent), at 100-1000 bar and 30-150 deg.C, in the presence of 0.02-1.5 wt.% initiator (w.r.t. monomer(s), to 40-90 wt.% conversion w.r.t. ester (b); R1 = 1-6C alkyl; R2 = H or 1-6C alkyl (opt. substd. with CN, SCN, F, Cl or Br); R3 = H, 1-6C alkyl, CN, F, Cl, Br or COOR5; R4 = COOH, CONH2, COOCH2OH, (a), COOCH2CH=CH2, COOCH2CH2Cl, CONHCH=CH2, COOCOCMe=CH2, COOR5, CN, F, Cl or Br; R5 = (R6O)nR7; (with R6 = 1-6C alkylene; R7 = H, 1-6C alkyl, CN, OR9, COR9, F, Cl or Br (with R9 = H or 1-6C alkyl)); R8 = COOR5, CN, F, Cl or Br (or both R8 together = -COOCO-, -CONHCO- or -(CO)2N(1-6C)-alkyl, n = 1-10.
