Recovery of amides of natural fatty acids from fats and oils is claimed, in which crude fats and oils opt. in a suitable solvent and with addition of suitable catalysts and antioxidants are reacted directly with amide forming reagents producing fatty acid amides which are opt. purified. Pref., the crude fats and oils contain a high content of functional (unusual) fatty acids. Crude oils and fats which can be used are euphorbia oil, linoleic acid or oleic acid rich sunflower oils, esp. the "high oleic" type, rape seed oil, esp. erucic acid rich rape seed oil, purge nut oil, (hydrated) ricinica oil, linseed oil, olive oil or sea animal oil such as fish or whale oil. 1 deg. and 2 deg. (cyclo) aliphatic, aliphatic-aromatic or aromatic mono amines or diamines can be used as amide-forming reagents, and esp. 1,2-diaminoethane or 1,6-diaminohexane. The solvent used is toluene, xylene, or petroleum ether. The raw material is converted into the amide at 20-300 deg.C. (esp. 50-200 deg.C.). The conversion occurs in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen or argon. The catalyst is ammonium chloride or p-toluene sulphuric acid. The antioxidant is ascorbaic acid or glucose. USE/ADVANTAGE - All crude oils and fats can be directly used as raw materials without extensive purification processes. High purity amides of fatty acids can be obtd. in direct conversion.
