<p>PURPOSE:To uniformly hold a spacing between electrode plates without causing orientation defects owing to the surface energy of spacers by disposing the spacers applied with surface treatment between electrode plates. CONSTITUTION:Spacers of granular alumina, glass fibers or the like are immersed in an org. solvent soln. of a surface treating agent of org. silane type, after which they are heat-treated for 5-30min at 100-180 deg.C, whereby the spacers 7 applied with the surface treatment are obtained. Thence, inclined longitudinal orientation layers 6 are provided on the surfaces of the substrates 2 formed with electrodes 1, and both electrode plates are opposed by way of said spacers 7. A liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy is sandwiched between the electrode plates, and voltage is applied between both electrode plates, so that liquid crystal molecules 4 are arranged roughly in parallel to the electrode plates.</p> |
