<p>Alkaline earth metal salts of 5,5'-azobis-salicylic acid of formula (V) and the aluminium salt of 5,5'-azobis-salicylic acid of formula (VI) are new. (Where M is alkaline earth metal). The cpds. are readily reduced to 5-amino-salicylic acid (5-ASA) in the colon by intestinal bacteria, and thus are useful in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, e.g. ulcerative colitis. Unlike with conventionally used sulphasalazine, 5-ASA is the only prod. of the redn. and no potentially toxic sulpha cpd. is co-produced. Cpds. (V) and (VI) have low solubility and are less easily absorbed from the small intestine than is 5,5'-azobis-salicylic acid. Dose is 5-100 mg/kg orally.</p> |
