The apparatus can separate materials of small size, in particular light materials. A tank (1) is filled up to a predetermined level (L) with liquid. Paddle rollers (10) are arranged at this level and expel the material having a lower specific weight which has floated up to the surface of the liquid. At the bottom (2) of the tank is located a discharge pipe (3) with a control valve (4) for the removal of material having a higher specific weight which has become deposited on the bottom. A pump (22) introduces, via a pipe (20) fitted with a flow breaker (21), a mixture formed of the conveyor liquid and the materials to be separated, in the tank (1) beneath the level (L) at a pressure greater than that existing in the inlet zone. It is thus possible to separate even very light materials without the need for a liquid whose specific weight lies between the specific weights of the materials to be separated. <IMAGE>
