The pieces are first embrittled by being quenched at a low temp., and are then crushed by a falling tup or monkey, which is made of the same material as the metal pieces. Both the pieces and the tup pref. consist of uranium. In the pref. plant, the initial pieces are loaded into a perforated basket, which is lowered into a bath of cryogenic liq., thus quenching the pieces. The pieces are next fed down a chute into a bin, so the tup can be allowed to fall and crush the pieces. The tup is then raised by a cable winch so it is ready for the next crushing operation. Simple, fast, and inexpensive crushing of uranium, where 100 kg can be crushed in one cycle of the plant. Because the tup is also made of uranium, the pieces are not contaminated with other materials during the crushing operation.
|
