The method relates to a telecommunications switching system, in particular a telephone switching system, to which subscriber stations with different dialling types, such as pulse dialling (IW) and audio-frequency push-button dialling (TWm, TWo), are connected. Each change of condition in a subscriber line loop of a subscriber station with a call in progress is evaluated and the dialling type of the subscriber station concerned or a switching signal (ET, FT) transmitted by it is determined therefrom. The determined dialling type is in each case recorded in a memory (TDSP), the contents of which are used in every assessment of a change in loop condition. In a switching system operated according to this method, subscriber stations with any given dialling type can be connected to any given subscriber terminal and can be interchanged virtually without restriction; the switching system is able to identify an interchange of this type as soon as the subscriber has dialled a digit following an interchange in its subscriber station. <IMAGE>
