Optical fibre (56) has a soft buffer coat (57) of resin, a capping layer (58) of a harder low friction resin, and an outer jacket (59) of a hard abrasion resistant resin. A pref. resin for the buffer coat is silicone resin. The capping layer may be of a polyvinyl acetal resin or a fluorinated polymer and the outer jacket may be of polyethylene, amorphous nylon, or a melt processable polyester. The buffer coat is 30-60 microns thick and the capping layer is 5 microns thick. The capping layer alleviates the prior handling problems associated with fibres having only the buffer coat, and also facilitates extrusion coating with the outer jacket. |
