Sub-calibre projectile with increased penetration capability - provided by penetrator cores of increasing size

A subcalibre projectile (10) has a ballistic nose cap (11) and a series of cores (20-22), the leading cores being relatively light initial cores (21, 22) and the trailing core being a relatively heavy main core (20). The novelty is that (a) the front end of the projectile (10) has a first initial core (21) with a cylindrical region (23) and a conically tapering front region; (b) the cylindrical region (23) has a smaller diameter than a second cylindrical initial core (22) located behind the first initial core (21); (c) the second initial core (22) has a smaller diameter than that of the main core (20); and (d) the nose cap (11), enclosing the initial cores (21, 22) and part of the main core (20), is provided with a separate tip (12). ADVANTAGE - The projectile has a simple structure and increased penetration capability without deleterious transverse force effects on the main core when used against targets of multiple material construction (multilayer armour).
