An antimicrobial composition widely effective against micro-organisms including bacteria, algae, fungi, viruses, yeasts and protozoa, comprises an antimicrobial agent such as 2-(4-thiazolyl benzimidazole; diiodomethyl-para-tolyl sulfone; para-chlorophenol diiodomethyl sulfone; 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one; 2-benziisothi-azolin-3-one; or 8-hydroxy quinoline (e.g. an imidazole, a benzimidazole, or a thiazole), the antimicrobial agent being coordinated with a hydrophilic substituent, and an oleophilic substituent forming the remainder of the composition. The active antimicrobial agent may be formed by the reaction of a metal salt, oxide or hydroxide with the antimicrobial agent referred to above, e.g. with 8-hydroxy quinoline. Typical useful compositions employ alkyl (C6 to C18) benzene sulfonic acid coordinated with a metal chelate of oxine, the metal being selected from the group: mercury, copper, cadmium, nickel, tin, aluminum and zinc. Alternatively an alkyl(C6 to C18) substituted phenol coordinated through the hydroxyl group may be employed. In its most general definition, the invention combines in a substituted aryl antimicrobial composition, an oleophilic substituent; a hydrophilic substituent; and an antimicrobial agent coordinated with the hydrophilic constituent.
|
