The antibiotic sisomicin, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, are prepared by aerobically fermenting on a nutrient medium which contains assimilable carbon and nitrogen sources and mineral salts. The microorganism which is used in the fermentation is a previously unknown Micromonospora danubiensis strain, in particular Micromonospora danubiensis MNG-00171. Use of this microorganism results in higher yields of sisomicin than are obtained when fermenting with known, sisomicin-producing microorganisms.
