PURPOSE:To easily start electric discharge in a luminous tube and reduce a time required for its restart, by providing a heat generating resistor in the luminous tube and heating said resistor in case of a restart. CONSTITUTION:Main electrodes 2, 3 are arranged in a luminous tube 1 and connected to a stabilizer 7 through their respective lead wires 5, 6. A filament 12 consisting of tungsten is connected to the main electrode 2, and the other end of the filament 12 is connected to the lead wire 6 through a thermally operated switch 13. Further in the vicinity of the thermally operated switch 13 a heater 14 is arranged. When an electric discharge lamp, after once turned off, is restarted, an electric current flows in the filament 12 and the heater 14 to heat the filament 12. If the thermally operated switch 13 is opened by heat of the heater 14, voltage is applied to across the main electrodes 2, 3 from the stabilizer through the lead wires 5, 6, then electric discharge is started between the hot heated filament 12 and the main electrode 3. |
