The rubber-clad fibre material, such as a coated non-woven for sealing applications, is passed under a smooth plate with the fibre side down. A narrow aperture in the plate is connected to a vacuum pump, to create underpressure in a recess in the lower surface of the plate. The recess in the lower surface of the plate is circular in shape with an equal space between the recess all round and the edge of the plate, of 6-15 mm width, so that the width of the recess is about half the width of the edge zone. A bypass valve is built into the connections to the recess in the plate. The appts. allows the condition of the fabric backing to be assessed, and used as a control function for the vulcanisation or other cladding processes for the rubber or similar coating material.
