The invention proceeds from a device for retaining a time card in a time recorder, a switch being actuable when the time card is pushed into an insertion slot, in such a way that an electronic character printer is movable transversely to the pushed-in time card and various particulars, for example the work time, can be printed on the time card in special printing columns. In order to ensure that the time card is clamped securely during the entire printing operation, a detent lever loaded by springing and having a detent member pointing towards the insertion slot is provided on the front part. A pushed-in time card can therefore be clamped between the detent member and a counterplate arranged on the opposite side of the insertion slot. A cam disc is coupled to the drive motor for the character printer in such a way that, when the drive motor is switched on via the switch actuated when the time card is pushed in, the detent lever is not loaded by the cam disc and consequently clamps the time card. After the conclusion of the printing operation, the detent lever is loaded by the cam disc in such a way that it is pivoted away from the insertion slot counter to the force of the spring, so that the printed time card can be removed. <IMAGE>
