The heat exchanger has a rectangular casing (1) which contains watter within which a tube bundle (11) is submersed. The bundle has tube coils between inlet and outlet headers (9, 10) through which liquified natural gas flows. Flue gases from an external burner are conducted into a pipe (7) running below the tube bundle (11). The pipe has side outlets (15) along its length which lead into narrow rectangular boxes (13) on both sides of the tube bundle. The inner walls of these are perforated and allow flue gases to bubble through into the water over the tube coils. This arrangement ensure that the flue gases are bubbled evely over all the tube coils and gives uniform heat exchange over the whole of the tubes.
