CROSSLINKABLE POLYETHYLENE COMPOSITION FOR ELECTRICAL INSULATION

PURPOSE:To provide a compsn. which is useful as an insulating layer material for high-voltage power cables and in which dielectric strength properties are enhanced, by blending dibenzylidene-D-sorbitol with a polyethylene compsn. contg. a chemical crosslinking agent. CONSTITUTION:0.5-40pts.wt. chemical crosslinking agent (ii) (e.g. dicumyl peroxide) and at least 0.1pts.wt. (pref. 0.3-1.0pts.wt.) dibenzylidene-D-sorbitol (iii), are blended with 100pts.wt. polyethylene (i) to produce the titled compsn. The blending is carried out in the following way: The components (i) and (iii) are melt-kneaded. The mixture is extruded to obtain solid particulate matter to which the component (ii) is then added. The mixture is melt-kneaded. Alternatively, said particulate matter is impregnated with the component (ii) in a molten state. As the component (i), polyethylene having a density of 0.923g/cm<3> or lower and a crystalline thickness of 120Angstrom or smaller, is preferred.
