Lead is removed from the hot exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine by passing it through a filter of an open-pored ceramic material of specified pore size and dimensions. The filter is selected from a range of ceramic materials of which cordierite is preferred. The filter may be in the form of supported discs or it may be formed with a honeycomb structure. In another embodiment the filter may be made of folded or honeycomb form from web on a porous support. The filter may bear a catalytic coating on its downstream face.
