GAS TIGHT SEAL FOR ELECTRODES IN SMELTING FURNACES

An apparatus providing a gas tight seal for electrodes in covered electrical smelting furnaces is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an annular housing affixed to tile furnace cover adjacent to the aperture in the cover through which the electrode and its associated electrode holder extend. There are a plurality of sealing members in the housing which are adjacent to the electrode holder. A pneumatic hose is positioned between the housing and the plurality of sealing members and the hose constantly urges the sealing members into sealing contact with the electrode holder.
