The new azo compounds are well suitable for coloring natural and synthetic polyamide fibers, polyurethane fibers and native and regenerated cellulose fibers. They are prepared by selectively diazotizing a 1-amino-2-solfo-4-(4'-aminophenyl)-aminoanthra-2'- and 5'-position by an equivalent amount of sodium nitrite in the presence of a mineral acid to give the diazonium compound of the phenylamino radical which is then coupled with a coupling component containing 1 or 2 fiber-reactive groups.
