Electrochemical apparatus is provided for use in a bipolar arrangement. The bipolar electrode is preferably a series of parallel plates each contained in a peripheral frame of electrically non-conductive material, preferably polyolefin. The plates are preferably of glass-like carbon coated on the cathodic side with a material to reduce the hydrogen over voltage characteristics.
