A detergent compsn. comprises- (A) 0.1-4% of vitreous phosphate of formula: (M2O)x(P2O5)y where M is an alkali metal, y is 5-50 and y:x is from 1:1 to 1:1.5 (B) 5-35% of a mixture of salts based on pyrophosphates and orthophosphates in ratio 1:1 to 200:1, (c) 0-30% of a tripolyphosphate salt (d) 3-30% of an anionic, nonionic, dipolar character or ampholyte surfactant; with the total phosphate in the composition being from 5-35%. Also an additive for detergents comprises 1-90% of (A) above and 10-99% of an organic protecting agent of m.p. 38-95 degrees C. Also, a granular detergent contains 1-15 pts. of the above additive and 85-99 pts. of granular detergent comprising 2-35% surfactant and 10-65% salt additive. Used in washing powders, the vitreous phosphate has a marked effect, particularly in hard water, of maintaining whiteness by preventing redeposition of soiling matter. Also the quantity of phosphate is less than that required for total sequestering of mineral in hard water and the tendency of the phosphates to form precipitates on washing machine surfaces is reduced.
|
