Metal castings intended for the mfr. of finished prods. are made with improved surface and internal quality, by melting a prescribed charge in a furnace (fig). The melt is then transferred to a refining vessel containing at least one submerged tuyere used to inject a gas mixt. containing O2, with 10-90 of a diluant gas. After injecting gas, a scrubbing gas is injected via the tuyere. The melt is then cast into a mould. Gas steam is pref. surrounded by a sheath of protective fluid.
