WAELZ PROCESS OF VOLATILIZING ZINC AND LEAD FROM IRON OXIDE-CONTAINING METERIALS

The Waelz process is employed for the removal of Zn and Pb from wastes contg. Fe oxides in an inclined rotary kiln, to obtain a partially reduced product for processing to pig iron in the blast furnace. A portion of the product emerging from the bottom end of the kiln is ground to 1 mm particles and mixed in an amt. of 5-15% with the initial Fe oxide wastes. The mixt. is pelletized with an org or inorg. binder, the pellets are partially dried at <300≦̸C in an O-contg. atm. and charged into the kiln through the upper end together with a carbonaceous solid reducing agent.
