The control compensates for grindstone wear in an automatic machine cutting bar stock into lengths. When the cutting pass is over, the grindstone (2) tends to drop faster than the speed at which the control ram operates. This difference in speed is detected by a circuit controlling the lifting operation of the grindstone. The ram (9) controlling grindstone movement can be fixed to a stirrup moving a slide (11) proportionally to the wear taking place on the grindstone.
